Jackson County, Alabama, is situated in
the north east part of the state, and contains 975 square miles. The Tennessee River runs on its south
east and south border, and Flint River on its south west border. It is watered by Paint Rock Creek
and its branches, and by Racoon Creek. Capital, Bellefonte. There were in 1840, neat cattle 9,528,
sheep 6,551, swine 59,551; wheat 30,956 bushels produced, rye 4,557, Indian corn 1,043, 107, oats
72,617, potatoes 35,260, tobacco 23,528 pounds, cotton 1,165,616, sugar 5,634; 12 stores, capital
$77,000; 4 tanneries, 29 distilleries, 24 grist mills, 7 saw mills, 1 printing office, 1 weekly
newspaper. Capital in manufactures $10,710. 19 schools with 535 scholars. Population: 1830, 12,700;
1840, whites 13,863, slaves 1,816, free colored 36; total, 15,715.
Bellefonte is a post village, capital of Jackson County, Alabama, 166 miles north east of Tuscaloosa,
667 miles from Washington City. On Paint Rock River, 2 miles west of Tennessee River. It has 2
churches, 1 Presbyterian and 1 Methodist, 2 academies, 12 stores, 50 dwellings, and 400 inhabitants.
